Tunis

Tunis is the capital of Tunisia and the start of every Iconic Tunisia journey. Your guide meets you at the airport and takes you to a hotel in the Tunis area, usually a guest house in Sidi Bou Said. Carthage, the Bardo Museum and the medina are all visited from here.

Visiting Tunis

Every journey begins with the same arrival. Your guide meets you at the airport and transfers you to your hotel in the Tunis area, and you have time to refresh yourself before anything is asked of you. Most of the programmes that open with a welcome dinner hold it in a restaurant in La Goulette or in Carthage, and each journey page says which. If you would like to begin touring on the first day, your guide is ready to start with a portion of what is listed for the next.

The capital is the base for the first days. Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, the Bardo Museum and the medina of Tunis are all visited from it, in different combinations on different programmes. On the eleven day journey the morning at Carthage leaves ample time for the US war cemetery, where you learn about Tunisia's role in World War II.

On five of the programmes the hotel named is Dar Said, a guest house in Sidi Bou Said, or similar. The twelve day journey and the Students Fun Tour begin on the coast at Gammarth instead.

What to see

  • A walking tour of the old medina
  • The Bardo Museum and its Roman and Carthaginian mosaics
  • Carthage, on the Gulf of Tunis
  • Sidi Bou Said, the blue and white village
  • The welcome dinner, which most sheets place in La Goulette or in Carthage
