Testour

Testour is a small town above the Medjerda, the river that waters the north of Tunisia, and it was built by Andalusian settlers who gave it their brick and their tilework. The minaret of its great mosque is the piece people come for, a tower of patterned brick with a clock near the top.

Visiting Testour

The Andalusian settlers who built Testour laid it out around a great mosque, and the mosque is still what the town is known for. Its minaret is patterned brick, with a lantern at the top and a clock face below it, and the ornament is unlike anything else in the country: the brickwork and the tiles belong to the architecture the settlers brought with them rather than to the mosques around them.

The streets of the old town run down from the mosque toward the Medjerda, which is the valley road between Tunis and the Roman cities of the interior. Testour sits on that road, which is why it is easy to add to a day already going west, and the town keeps a yearly festival of the music the settlers brought.
