Bulla Regia
Bulla Regia is a Roman site in north west Tunisia known for its underground villas, built below ground to escape the summer heat. The villas keep well preserved mosaics, and the city had been an important part of the Numidian kingdom before it became a Roman settlement.

Visiting Bulla Regia
The distinction of Bulla Regia is its subterranean architecture. The villas were built with rooms underground to escape the extreme summer heat, a Roman answer to a local climate, and the site combines them with ordinary buildings above ground. The villas are remarkably well preserved, and they are adorned with intricate mosaics of mythological scenes, daily activities and geometric patterns.
Before it was Roman, Bulla Regia was an important city in the Numidian kingdom. Its history runs through Punic, Numidian, Roman and Byzantine periods, and its architecture and everyday life show the interaction between the Numidian population and Roman settlers. Public baths, temples, a theatre and residential buildings stand alongside the villas, and excavation and research continue.
The archaeological journey visits Bulla Regia on its third day, after Utica, and sleeps at Ain Draham. On the ten and eleven day journeys it comes on the fourth day with Dougga, on the way to Kairouan. The sheets describe a well preserved site with numerous examples of underground architecture and well preserved mosaics.
