The Ghriba Synagogue

The Ghriba Synagogue is the best known of the synagogues on Djerba, an island that is home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world, which dates its presence there to more than 2,000 years. It is known for an annual spring pilgrimage, and our eleven and twelve day journeys visit it.

Visiting the Ghriba Synagogue

The Ghriba is one of many synagogues on Djerba, though it is the most widely known, as the site of an annual spring pilgrimage. Djerba is home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world, and the community dates its presence on the island to more than 2,000 years. Our guide to Tunisia calls the Ghriba one of the oldest synagogues in the world. The eleven and twelve day journeys give it a place in the island day, with Guellala and the souk at Houmt Souk.
